Southwestern Fashion Trend: How to Style It

Southwest Fashion Trends: How to Style It

Southwest Fashion Trends Banner

The style at Cavender’s is inspired by authentic Western life, by cowboys, cowgirls and the wild west, this is no secret. Adding to that we also sell clothing, shoes and accessories that borrow bold colors and patterns from the Native Americans. The combination of these styles contributes to Southwestern fashion as a trend.

Historically, American fashion designers have always found ways to tip their hats to a variety of cultures. While turquoise necklaces and ponchos have adapted to become more mainstream, the use of them is still a nod to the indigenous people of the Southwestern Plains and Mexico. Many brands including Ralph Lauren, Patagonia and Coach have even had their take on this timeless trend.

Southwestern wear today often comes in the form of silver “concho” belts, heavy woven fabrics, fringe and even animal prints like brown and white spotted cow skin. Other items making a comeback with this trend include Aztec patterns or “tribal” prints, sherpa-lined denim and bolo ties.

Western and Aztec Blend

While having their own distinct styles, Western and Southwestern fashion often overlap and complement each other. At Cavender’s, we have a variety of brands and products that capture the essence of Southwestern fashion, and they are spread across men’s, women’s and kids’ footwear as well as in apparel, headwear and accessories.

Our Favorite Ways to Style It

Make a Statement – Because Southwestern patterns can be so eye-catching, we recommend pairing them with solid colors. Try a black t-shirt or blouse with black jeans and let your Aztec-printed poncho or jacket stand out. You could also rock an all-white getup with louder accessories like turquoise jewelry or a fringe boot.

Women's Aztec Sweaters

Pair with Denim – Nothing says Southwestern quite like a woven or silver-studded belt. Grab your favorite pair of denim or upgrade to some of our best-selling men’s and women’s jeans and pair it with a unique concho or beaded belt. Denim is timeless, and a staple to most Southerners’ wardrobes. We say you can never have enough. So double up on denim jeans and a pearl snap to complete any Southwestern look.

Women's Denim

Always Add Boots – Much like Western wear, Southwestern clothing is also popular in places where boots are both fashionable and functional. We think boots are the perfect footwear to round out any look featuring fringe, turquoise, Aztec clothing or animal prints. Boot City is part of our name, and we are proud to be experts on boots. You can shop a vast selection that feature Southwestern accents at Cavender’s.

Turquoise Accented Boots

Make it Seasonal – Southwestern patterns are not specific to one time of year, which is why we love them so much. You might find yourself reaching for outerwear with that iconic print on your favorite Aztec sweater during cold months, or a dress with a similar style when it warms up. These prints come in a variety of colors. We love the lighter, brighter ones in Spring and Summer while the darker browns and reds work great in Fall and Winter.

Women's Aztec Jackets

Mix & Match – For a full Southwestern look from head to toe, combine all the elements that make this trend a hit. Start with one of our graphic tees which feature everything from Spanish phrases to Southwestern landscapes and thunderbirds. Next, add a suede, denim or leather fringe skirt. To top it off, shop one of our colorful handbags to compliment your ensemble.

Women's Mix and Match

Keep It Simple – Southwestern attire is often bright and bold, but it does not always have to be. Sometimes, the beauty is in the details. Which is why we suggest looking for items that are inadvertently southwestern. For example, shop for shirts that have textured or patterned pockets or collars instead of going for an all-over print. We love a good hat with a southwestern-style lining and boots with just a hint of turquoise, fringe or animal print.

Women's Aztec Tops

Dress it Up – Functional by nature, Southwest-style clothing is easy to incorporate into everyday style. We love finding ways to wear our favorite tribal-type pieces out on the town. Spice up your date nights or festival attire with our Southwestern wear. It is sure to stand out, spark conversations and bring in the compliments. For women, add silver or turquoise earrings and necklaces to any outfit for a touch of Southwest. For men, tuck a cool tribal printed button-up into your nicest pants or throw on a vest for a getup that is sure to impress.

Men's Aztec Shirts

Can’t get enough of this trend? Hop on the bandwagon and visit us in person where our experts can help you style a variety of southwest pieces we have in stock.

If you don’t live near one of our many locations, you can always browse our online inventory by searching things like “Aztec” or “Southwest” in the search bar at Cavenders.com.

The weather is cooling down, the leaves are changing colors and almost everything is available in a pumpkin spice flavor. It’s officially Fall. Now that we’ve gotten through an unusually warm summer, it’s time to start thinking about how to gear up for the cooler temps. As you are pulling the sweaters out from the back of your closet, take some time to browse our Fall Essentials Guide. Women's Sweaters

Women’s sweaters: Cozy and cute, sweaters are a must-have for women in the fall. Our favorites this year include southwest and Aztec prints, stripes and oversized sweaters. Focus on details like fringe, buttons or pockets to make a statement. A sweater can be dressed up or down depending on the event. To dress it up, pair your sweater with a couple of statement jewelry pieces and nice jeans. Dress it down and make it extra comfy by getting an oversized sweater and wearing it with warm leggings.

Fan-favorite brands: Rock & Roll Denim, Magnolia Lane, Wrangler

Men's Long Sleeve Shirts

Men’s long sleeve western shirts: You can never go wrong with classic, button-up, long sleeve western shirts. Fan-favorite brands: Ariat, Wrangler, Cinch

Jeans

Jeans are a year-round essential, but we find they’re most comfortable this time of year when the weather is cooler but not frigid. Extremely versatile, they can be dressed up or down. They are comfortable but durable enough to go from a morning stroll through the pumpkin patch to the late-night bonfire without missing a beat.

Men's Jeans

Classic blue jeans: Restock on the classics with some denim blue jeans this fall. The variety of colors and cuts makes blue jeans easy to pair with anything and just about everything goes with them. Cattle Barons Galas Support the American Cancer Society’s Invaluable Mission

Cattle Barons Galas Support the American Cancer Society’s Invaluable Mission

Cattle Baron's Galas Support the American Cancer Society Banner

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is on a mission to free the world from cancer. Until that happens, ACS will fund and conduct research, while sharing expert information, supporting patients, and spreading the word about prevention. Their goal is longer lives filled with quality time for everyone.

The Cattle Baron’s Galas are annual fundraisers for the American Cancer Society. Galas generally feature food, auctions, games and live music with a western theme.

mechanical bull riding

For more than 30 years Cavender’s has supported ACS through these events. The devastating effects of cancer touch many lives, including within the Cavender’s family. For this reason, it is a focus of our charitable giving, and dear to our heart.

San Antonio One Shot Skeet Shot Sponsor

We recently sat down with our own Brett Emmons, San Antonio store manager and Martina Robertson, Director of Development with the American Cancer Society. Martina shared with us some facts and history surrounding the Cattle Barons’ Galas. Brett is co-chairing the San Antonio Gala in October. He has personal reasons why he has gotten involved in ACS. He has devoted much of his time and passion to the organization.

How many Cattle Barons Galas are across the US? This year there are about 23 Cattle Baron’s Balls that will be happening throughout the country for the American Cancer Society.

How many of the Galas are Western themed? All of them trend to a Western theme.

What is the history of the Cattle Barons Gala? The first Cattle Baron’s Ball began in 1974 in Dallas, TX. Jacque Wynne and Patti Hunt created a backyard Barbecue for friends and family featuring entertainment and food at a private ranch. The event raised over $50,000 and the rest is history!

How much do these galas raise across the US in a year? This year, the projected total amount for all the Cattle Barons Gala events is a little over $11 million for ACS.

What do these funds go toward? Vital general cancer research.

A Brief history of ACS and the San Antonio Cattle Barons from Brett Emmons:

This year marks the 44th anniversary of the Cattle Baron’s Gala in San Antonio. It is the largest fundraiser of the year for the San Antonio area. The goal this year is to make 1 million dollars to help fund the existing programs and to bring the Hope Lodge into existence. There is the ACS fashion show as well as a Skeet shoot that are also annual events to raise funds.

The ACS Cattle Baron’s Gala and other fundraising events support the work of the ACS in San Antonio. 100% of the money raised from these events stay in the San Antonio area. Proceeds provide a range of help from rides to and from treatment to Wig fittings and all the way to funding the newest Hope Lodge in Texas. This may be the most exciting of all that is going on now. The Hope Lodge will house patients and their families if they are coming in from out of town and having to stay to receive their treatments. Free of charge! We have the property already and are working on finalizing the plans to break ground on the building. This will be only the 3rd facility of its kind in Texas.

I lost my mother to Ovarian Cancer in 1988 when I was 16. My Grandmother also lost her fight with Pancreatic Cancer a few years later. My father was a survivor of Prostate Cancer. So, I started volunteering to help make a difference in someone else’s fight. It can sometimes be very emotional working with the folks that are having to go through the fight. But it is super rewarding seeing the winners that are being produced with the help of their doctors, family and friends as well as the ACS.

I have been volunteering with the ACS for about 10 years now. I started working with the Ranch Chic Fashion show. When we took it over, they cleared around $12,000 dollars for that event. Last year the Ranch Chic Fashion show broke $100,000 for the first time ever. I have also served on the Baron’s Award committee and Served as Chairman of that committee for 3 years. I am now honored to be one of the ACS’s Cattle Baron’s Gala Co-Chairs. I was concerned about having enough time to do this position justice. What I found is that the time is there! Especially, when you are doing it to see what good comes out of it. I truly believe we all should be giving back to the communities we live in, in one form or another. I feel it is a mission that we should all take upon ourselves. We all can donate. Whether it be time, talent, or treasure, we all have something we can give back. My passion is working with the ACS. It is worth the time to find your passion for helping others.

San Antonio Fashion Show

I am very blessed to work for a company like Cavender’s that supports the ACS in most all our markets. They also help to support me personally, with time and donations, to help my mission in working with the ACS. Cavender’s was awarded the Baron’s Award for outstanding business of the year for the ACS. It has been a wonderful thing seeing what local businesses and individuals have done to show their support. I have found that people really want to help and sometimes all it takes is to ask. This disease affects all of us. It doesn’t see color. It doesn’t see gender. It is ugly and it is mean. But I truly believe with the research that is being done, also being funded by ACS donations, that we will someday see an end to Cancer! My hope is that you reach out to your local chapter of The American Cancer Society and see what you can do for them. Utilize your time or your talent or your treasure to give back to those in your community that need help.

American Cancer Society Logo

The American Cancer Society is the nation’s largest private, nonprofit investor in cancer research. Since 1946, the American Cancer Society has invested more than $3.8 billion in research to help understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it, and discover new ways to cure it. If you would like to donate, you can do that here.

We put together a program that even today celebrates the men and women who make their living horseback working cattle providing beefsteak for the dinner tables of America. In 30 years we have continued to grow and serve as a platform to present competitions for our scholarship program awarded to young people which as of today, exceeds $1,000,000. The award is made to deserving young people who want to further their education.

Our Audience is from all over this great nation as well as other parts of the planet. The excitement of the ranch rodeo, the entertainment value of the cowboy music and poetry presentations, the sights, sounds, and smells of the chuckwagon camp, and the time spent dancing to western swing music make for a fun-filled family western weekend. Our sincere thanks to all of the folks who have supported us for 30 years.

A Comprehensive Guide to Felt Hats: The Different Types and How to Wear Them

A Comprehensive Guide to Felt Hats Banner

There are many different types of felt hats that can be worn in a variety of styles, so it can seem overwhelming when you first begin your search. Don’t worry. In this blog post, we’ll break down the different types of felt hats and how to wear them. We will also cover the materials used in making felt hats and how to take care of them.

Different Types of Felt Hats

There are several different types of felt hats to choose from and each one has its own unique features. At Cavender’s, we offer many different types of felt cowboy hats for men featuring a variety of colors, crowns, and brim sizes.  We also offer many different types of western style felt hats for women.

Cowboy Felt Hat

The cowboy felt hat is our most popular style, and a staple of the American west. It comes in a variety of shapes, styles, and colors. There are different crowns available, and each invoke a different style. Cattleman’s crown has a fold in the middle, reminiscent of the classic cowboy hat. Pinch front crowns offer a traditional but sophisticated look, whereas the rounded top, open crown style gives a more modern look. Cowboy felt hats with rounded brick crowns are a good mix between the cattleman’s crown and pinch front crown.

There are also different styles of bands and buckles, brims, material, and different colors to choose from. So, if you’re looking to buy your first cowboy felt hat, go try a few different styles in-store at Cavender’s.  Once you know what shapes suit your head, facial structure and style best, you can easily shop online next time. Many people who haven’t bought a felt hat before also might not be aware of their head size, so it’s important to try before you buy.

How to Style Your Felt Hat

Felt hats can be worn in many ways. They can be worn with the brim up or down, depending on the style of the hat. They can also be worn with a variety of different outfits, from casual to formal. If you’re choosing from one of our western felt hats, one popular way to style them is to pair them with nice jeans, cowboy boots – perhaps exotics depending on how formal the occasion is – and a button-up shirt.

For women, you have more options when styling your felt hat. Pair it with a western dress or skirt for date night, or wear it with jeans and a top for a more casual look.

Choosing a Felt Hat

Felt hats are made from animal hair, typically wool or rabbit fur but can also be made from beaver fur or chinchilla. The felting process used to make felt hats makes them water-resistant and because they are naturally antibacterial, they are also resistant to retaining sweat and odor. The material used in felt hats also makes them keepsake items because they’re long-lasting and are not easily damaged.

When checking the quality of a felt hat, there are a few things you should look for. First, make sure that the felt is woven tightly and that there are no loose threads. Second, check to see if the felt hat is water-resistant. Third, felt hats should be soft and comfortable to wear. Lastly, make sure that the felt hat is the right size for your head.

When buying a felt hat, it is important to buy from a reputable source. There are many fake-felt hats on the market, so make sure you do your research before making a purchase. A good felt hat should last you many years, so it is worth investing in a quality felt hat. At Cavender’s, you can trust that we source only the best quality felt hats and are always transparent about the percentage of fur. You can tell what percent of fur was used by looking for the number in front of the “X”. The higher percentage of fur used, the higher the number will be.

How to Take Care of Your Felt Hat
