XIT Rodeo & Reunion | Dalhart, TX | 8/3 – 8/5

There was nothing in the history of the West quite like the XIT Ranch. In the 1880s, it was the largest ranch in the world under the fence, and it sprawled across the Texas Panhandle up from the old Yellow House headquarters near what is now Lubbock, northward to the Oklahoma Panhandle in a crazy strip that was toughly thirty miles wide. At one time, the ranch ran over 150,000 cattle.

Since 1936, cowboys and their families who worked the XIT Ranch have been gathering at an annual reunions to reminisce about life on the ranch. Rodeo organizations remained fragmented until the late 1920s, when the Rodeo Association of America, comprised of rodeo committees and promoters from across the U.S., named its first champions.

2023 Taylor Rodeo | Taylor, TX | 7/13 – 7/15

The Great American Cowboy built this country with strong hands and a lonely heart. He brought beef to the north and tamed the west. The history of the cowboy’s life is written in books and songs. Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and John Wayne immortalized him in the movies.

Taylor’s rodeo is different because of the tremendous amount of crowd participation. The crowd can join in such events as the Calf Scramble and Steer Saddling. The rodeo cowboys who ride in the Taylor Annual Rodeo do not carry a membership card. This is an open rodeo; a place where you can watch local people rope and ride. Like most amazing inventions and developments, the National High School Rodeo Association began as a simple, logical idea which over the course of a few short years, took shape into something quite incredible.

Today, Claude Mullins’ dream has evolved into an organization that probably could not have been foreseen when he first saw those young boys innocently practicing their roping skills so many years ago. Mullins passed away in 1990. Yet his legacy of support for youth, and his love of rodeo, continues to have a dramatic difference in the lives of over 10,500 students in the United States, Canada, and Australia. And what was once a national finals that featured 121 entries has now grown into a National High School Finals Rodeo that features over 1,500 students on a regular basis and has become known as the “World’s Largest Rodeo.”

The creation of the Junior High Division in 2004 helped bring the excitement, mentorship, and thrills of rodeo to a new generation of junior high school students. We are a 501 (c) (4) charity.

The Coors Cowboy Club serves as an ambassador for Amarillo and through our efforts and assistance, numerous national events now occur in Amarillo. We have helped host events such as The National Cutting Horse Association, United States Team Penning Association and The Cowboy Mounted Shooters competitions. We also volunteer our time, services and goodwill to Eveline Rivers’ Make A Child Smile Project, Khiva Shrine, Homes for Our Troops and Amarillo area law enforcement to name a few.

Blacklands Bull Buckout | Taylor, TX | 6/3

Since 1950, he Taylor Rodeo Association has proudly brought to you the Taylor Annual Rodeo in the home town of Bill Pickett. The crowds that come to this yearly event have grown because of the enthusiasm and the excitement, but most of all for the entertainment they receive.

Over the years the Taylor Annual Rodeo has become the big fish in a small pond. It is one of the biggest and best small-town rodeos anywhere. Crowds at the event exceed expectations every year, and every year more and more people come out to Taylor to experience rodeo at it’s finest.

Some of the cowboys you get to see are the future of the sport. CPRA riders are welcome, since this is an open event, but they may not come away with the check.

Gladewater Rodeo Round-Up | Gladewater, TX | 6/7 – 6/10

The Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo was founded in 1937 by local businessman J. N. “Jack” Yates, a Sioux Indian from North Dakota who had moved to Gladewater during the oil boom. Yates, a veteran of World War I, organized the first rodeo ever to be held in France as entertainment for the soldiers, and according to historical documents, he sought to recreate the event in Gladewater.

Yates owned and operated J. N. “Jack” Yates Pipe and Supply Company, and recruited citizens to donate either funds or supplies to construct a rodeo arena. The structure was originally built from lumber, but the rodeo was such a success that it was reconstructed out of steel two years later.

The Round-Up Rodeo’s recognition received a substantial boost in 1971 when Johnny Quintana scored 98 points in its bull-riding competition — a feat that held world-record status for three years.

Since its humble beginnings, the rodeo has become nationally known and ranks among the top rodeos in the state as well as the top 10 percent in the nation. The arena has hosted some of the nation’s most notable competitors, including Don Gay, an eight-time PRCA World Champion Bull Rider; Roy Cooper, the leading money winner of all time for the PRCA; Ty Murray; Lane Frost; Jim Shoulders; and many others.

Tyler, We’re Comin’ Home!

Tyler, We’re Comin’ Home!

“Chase your dreams but always know the road that will lead you home again,” is a saying that rings true for the folks at Cavender’s. In 1977, Cavender’s opened its fourth ever store in Tyler, Texas.

Tyler Store New Storefront

Cavender’s thrived in Tyler, becoming the go-to store for the best Western products at affordable prices with excellent customer service. A couple of decades later, the home office operations were moved from Pittsburg, Texas, to Tyler—making the city the official hub for the Western retailer. Many members of the Cavender’s family also followed suit and planted roots in Tyler and surrounding areas–where they have worked, lived, volunteered, attended school, and become deeply involved in the community.

Because of great success in Tyler and surrounding areas, Cavender’s began to open in more Texas towns like College Station, Greenville, Huntsville, Hurst, Lufkin, Palestine, Paris, and Texarkana. Then eventually, more stores opened in larger markets like Fort Worth, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Austin and Amarillo. Cavender’s became synonymous with great Western wear not only in East Texas, but throughout the entire Lone Star State. In the early 2000s, Cavender’s took its legacy into four other states. Now, Cavender’s has locations nationwide–from Colorado to Alabama to Nevada to Nebraska—employing 2,000-plus associates.

Cavender’s has maintained their core values of quality products and customer service, while elevating its store design and craftsmanship. With each new store comes new, updated finishes –including modern signage and fixtures, cow-shaped mannequins, framed family photos, custom hat bars, and more intricate details. These touches, along with top-notch customer service, have made shopping at Cavender’s feel like a special occasion to many customers.

Tyler Store JRC & Sons Feature

Because the Tyler location was the fourth ever for the retailer, the flagship store has somewhat been left behind in the sense of a beautiful, welcoming store design. But after 46 years in the community, Cavender’s decided the 2025 W SW Loop 323 location was well-deserving of an update that’s reflective of the latest stores. After all, Tyler is our home, and that’s something we’re proud of.

So, after many months of in all-in remodel, the Cavender’s location has reopened its doors. Clay Cavender, Vice President of Merchandising, led the redesign of the store, and gave KLTV 7 a behind-the-scenes look.

“We’ve never been able to show our best face in Tyler, and now we’re able to do that, so we’re just excited for everybody to see it,” Clay Cavender told KLTV 7. “Took the ceiling out, and it’s basically a brand-new store. Top to bottom, left to right.”

Tyler Store Pat Cavender Feature

The enhanced features include new flooring, lighting, wall finishes, fixtures, and a new exterior façade which will be implemented in future store designs. Every cubic inch of the 16,765 square-foot sales floor has a Cavender family touch, from dressing rooms dedicated to founders James and Pat Cavender to family murals to framed photos of Cavender family members hunting, fishing and ranching.

Tyler Store Family Photos

“[Mom and Dad] would love it. My mom used to help me do all this years ago, and she would love it. My dad would love all of the family photos for sure,” said Clay Cavender.

From May 5-7, Cavender’s will be welcoming the Tyler community back into the remodeled flagship store with a Texas-sized homecoming celebration.

Take a look at the store and hear the Interview with Clay Cavender below.
