However, on September 6, 2008, at the age of 19, Koben’s career was cut short by a life-altering spinal cord injury while competing in a PBR classic. Since then, the majority of his time has been spent on pursuing recovery.

In 2014, Koben was inspired to get back involved in the sport he loved, by hosting a bull riding event in Amarillo, Texas. With the help of great friends and amazing sponsors, the event has grown every year since and was sanctioned by the PBR in 2015. Due to Covid, the 2020 event was skipped, but my event came back stronger than ever in 2021 with over 2,100 people in attendance and $30,000 funds raised for the Press On Foundation. 2023 Taylor Rodeo | Taylor, TX | 7/13 – 7/15

The Great American Cowboy built this country with strong hands and a lonely heart. He brought beef to the north and tamed the west. He spent his nights under lonely stars by a camp fire and spent his days roping, riding and fighting the elements – and some lived to tell about it. The history of the cowboy’s life is written in books and songs. Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and John Wayne immortalized him in the movies.

Taylor’s rodeo is different because of the tremendous amount of crowd participation. The crowd can join in such events as the Calf Scramble and Steer Saddling. The rodeo cowboys who ride in the Taylor Annual Rodeo do not carry a membership card. This is an open rodeo; a place where you can watch local people rope and ride. Some of the cowboys you get to see are the future of the sport. CPRA riders are welcome, since this is an open event, but they may not come away with the check.

National High School Finals Rodeo | Gillette, WY | 7/16 – 7/22

Like most amazing inventions and developments, the National High School Rodeo Association began as a simple, logical idea which over the course of a few short years, took shape into something quite incredible.

Today, Claude Mullins’ dream has evolved into an organization that probably could not have been foreseen when he first saw those young boys innocently practicing their roping skills so many years ago. Mullins passed away in 1990. Yet his legacy of support for youth, and his love of rodeo, continues to have a dramatic difference in the lives of over 10,500 students in the United States, Canada, and Australia. And what was once a national finals that featured 121 entries has now grown into a National High School Finals Rodeo that features over 1,500 students on a regular basis and has become known as the “World’s Largest Rodeo.”

The creation of the Junior High Division in 2004 helped bring the excitement, mentorship, and thrills of rodeo to a new generation of junior high school students. And with each passing year, the Association continues to build upon its legacy of promoting the sport, while also supporting and preparing the future leaders of our society.

Events included pony races, bronco busting, and steer roping among others. At the time, these events were seen as a test of a cowboy’s skill. The inaugural event was so successful that the next year it was expanded to two days and a parade was added. The rodeo expanded as the years went on and more affiliated events were added. Its reputation increased as well. And today it is one of the most authentic and largest rodeo events in the world.
