The Best Jeans for Cowboy Boots – Your Ultimate Style Guide

Cowboy boots, with their timeless style and rugged charm, are a staple footwear choice that transcends trends, but what are the best jeans to wear with them? When it comes to pairing them with jeans, achieving a cohesive, stylish and authentic look can seem daunting. Fear not, because Cavender’s has your western wear guide to success, no matter what your profession or style.

Today, the iconic pairing of jeans and cowboy boots is a universally recognized fashion statement and still one of the most practical ensembles to live everyday life. Is it okay to wear cowboy boots over jeans? How long should jeans be to wear with boots? What style of jeans look best with cowboy boots? We’ve got the answers to all your questions to create the perfect jeans-and-cowboy-boots combination.

A collage featuring three images showcasing men's and women's western style. On the left, a woman stands confidently, wearing a cream-colored graphic t-shirt, dark blue jeans with white stitching, and brown cowboy boots, accented with a large belt buckle. The center image focuses on the lower half of a person wearing dark blue jeans and brown cowboy boots. On the right, a man is dressed casually in a beige t-shirt and lightly washed blue jeans, topped with a baseball cap, while the lower panel shows a woman smiling and looking down, wearing a light blue denim jacket, dark blue jeans, and cowboy boots, her hand resting on her hip.

Choosing the Right Jeans

One of the first considerations in choosing the right pair of jeans is body type. For a curvy shape, you might opt for bootcut or straight-leg jeans that balance your proportions. If you are petite, high-waisted skinny, or slim-fit jeans will elongate your legs. In contrast, boyfriend or relaxed fit jeans add volume and balance to a tall and slender body type. Once you know what the most flattering is for you, find the best fit and style of boots accordingly.

A three-panel collage showcasing western wear. On the left, a close-up of dark blue jeans tucked into brown cowboy boots. The middle panel features a woman in a playful beige fringed tank top and dark blue jeans, paired with cowboy boots, striking a dynamic pose. The right panel shows a man in a blue paisley patterned western shirt, blue jeans, and brown cowboy boots, standing confidently with his hands out by his side and wearing a white cowboy hat.

As far as fit, taking a trip to your local Cavender’s to try on jeans in different sizes and cuts is a great idea. Pay careful attention to the length of your jeans, as you don’t want them to be too short or long with your cowboy boots. A good rule of thumb to follow is making sure your hemline stops at the end of your boots’ shaft. However, if you are going to be riding in these jeans, you may want them to be a little longer when standing.

The next factor for jeans is color, or wash. Dark washes are considered classic and can be dressed up or down, while light washes tend to look more casual. However, Cavender’s has many colors to explore outside of the traditional blue denim realm. For example, black jeans can really add a touch of sophistication, while fun prints will incorporate your unique personality into your style. Color will play a part in what boots you pair with your jeans, as you won’t want them to clash. Distressed jeans can also add personality, but overly ripped styles should be avoided with cowboy boots.

Types of Cowboy Boots

Not only is there a wide selection of denim to check out at Cavender’s, but we’ve got so many options for cowboy boots, too. Purchasing a new pair of cowboy boots is a big deal. You should own boots that speak to your personal style and make you feel good, whether you’re at a major function or taking care of the ranch.

An image showcasing the top view of four different styles of cowboy boot toes against a parchment-like background. From left to right: a 'Square Toe' made of a light brown textured leather with detailed stitching around the edges, a 'Snip Toe' in a polished black leather, a 'Round Toe' in a dark brown patterned leather, and a 'Punchy Toe' in a matte suede-like material with decorative stitching on top. Each style is labeled below in a rustic typeface that complements the western theme of the image.

Classic, western cowboy boots feature a tall shaft that hits mid-calf and are practical for work. They come in round toes, square toes, snip toes and more, as well as varying heel heights and sole types. A twist on these boots is the roper style, which is slightly shorter with a lower heel and round toe.

A side-by-side image showcasing men's western work attire. On the left, a close-up on the legs shows dark blue jeans over brown leather work boots with thick soles. The right side features a full-body shot of a man dressed in a khaki work shirt, blue jeans, and the same brown work boots. He is wearing a cap with a logo and is looking down while adjusting his belt, which has a large ornate buckle.

For a bolder statement that is outside the traditional look of cowboy boots, women might like ankle boots or taller knee-high boots with taller heels, bright colors and exquisite detailing. These open an entire new world of fashion in the Western lifestyle.

Style Tips and Pairing Suggestions

All in all, the best jeans for boots depend on the type of boots, the occasion for which they’re being worn and the individual preferences of the person wearing them. There are some guidelines you may want to follow.

A side-by-side image with the left side featuring a woman in a cropped floral blouse and blue denim jeans standing with one hand in her hair, portraying a casual, yet thoughtful pose. On the right side, there's a close-up of her feet showing the bottom of the jeans and brown snip toe cowgirl boots. The images depict a relaxed, yet stylish western look.

For women, skinny styles can be tucked in to draw attention to the boot itself. Boot cut, flare and wide leg cuts should be worn over the top of your cowgirl boots. Cropped jeans are ideal for ankle booties. Riding jeans are perfect for the women working or competing horseback, and they pair well with traditional cowboy boots. For a dressier look when hitting the town, try a pair of trousers with fashionable, trendy boots, or mix it up by wearing a pair of cropped wide leg jeans with a fun pair of short ankle boots. Just remember, when wearing jeans over your boots, you will want to pair that relaxed-fit denim with shorter boots that don’t go all the way up to where the jeans become tighter around your leg.

A composite image displaying four styles of women's western jeans against a textured, neutral background. From left to right: 'FLARE' jeans featuring a wide bell-bottom leg over black shoes; 'TROUSER' jeans with a wide leg and a relaxed fit over patterned shoes; 'SKINNY' jeans with a tight fit throughout, paired with embellished ankle boots; and 'STRAIGHT' jeans with a uniform leg width over classic black cowboy boots. Each style is labeled at the bottom in a rustic font, and all jeans are shown from a side view, focusing on the fit and silhouette of the denim.

The same goes for men – the outline of your boots should not be shown through your jeans. So, when styling an outfit with jeans over your cowboy boots, make sure you wear denim pants that are loose around your leg and have plenty of length to cover the entire boot shaft. For a complete work outfit, our men’s work jeans are the best complement to our western work boots. There is a range of options to choose from when it comes to men’s denim at Cavender’s from relaxed to slim fits or boot cuts to straight legs.

The middle shows 'RELAXED FIT' jeans with a looser fit through the leg over distressed leather boots. On the right, 'SLIM FIT' jeans offer a tighter fit, tapering down to the ankle, paired with polished brown cowboy boots. Each jean style is labeled below in a western-style font, and all models are seen from the side, with the upper body cropped out, highlighting the jeans' fit.

Here are a few pairing suggestions from Cavender’s to get you started in the right direction.

Casual Chic – Pair dark wash boot cut jeans with square or snip toe boots, a plain, reliable tee and a classic jacket.

On the left, she stands confidently, hand on hip, wearing dark blue jeans and a white t-shirt with a graphic print, complete with a decorative belt and a square buckle. On the right, a close-up of her lower legs and feet shows the dark blue jeans resting atop square-toed cowboy boots in a weathered brown leather. The two images together depict a modern take on classic western style.

Dressy Western – For men, pair nice jeans with a western button-down and a cowboy hat. For women, elevate your look with black skinny jeans, colorful boots, a basic top and fun accessories.

On the right, the full outfit is revealed, featuring the man standing confidently in the same jeans and boots, complemented by a crisp white shirt, a tailored sports coat in a dark weave, a large silver belt buckle, and a light-colored cowboy hat. His posture and attire convey a polished, modern cowboy look.

On The Ranch – Be prepared for anything with durable work jeans, boots made for hard-working cowboys and cowgirls, a belt and a western ball cap.

The right side of the image presents the man in a full-body pose, wearing the same jeans and boots, paired with a simple white t-shirt with a logo on the chest and a trucker cap. He stands with hands tucked into his jean pockets, exuding a relaxed and confident demeanor.

Maintenance and Care Tips

When you find those jeans that you always reach for or those boots that you feel the most confident in, you’ll want to take care of them to ensure longevity. To do so, always wash jeans according to the care label. Clean and condition your cowboy boots regularly. Air drying your denim is another way to keep them in tip-top shape. Storing your boots upright with boot trees will help uphold their structure and shape.

An assortment of cowboy boot care products arranged on a paper-like textured background. The items include a large brown horsehair brush with a logo etched into the wooden handle, a tin labeled 'Scout Boot Care Mink Oil' for conditioning, a bottle of 'Scout Boot Care Instant Boot Shine' in a black container with a neutral color indication, a small white rolled-up cloth, and two bottles of 'Bick 4 Leather Conditioner' which clean, condition, polish, and protect leather. These products suggest a comprehensive boot maintenance kit.

Most importantly, remember that there are multiple ways to pair jeans and cowboy boots. You’ll want to follow these tips to look and feel authentic in our Western heritage. Different washes, cuts and jean styles will pair well with different colors and styles of boots. Explore to find what looks best on you and what you enjoy. At that time, the Sheriff’s office had a posse (drill team). With their help, a drill team was born. The drill was refined and still runs the same way today. It was Mrs. Haney Ambrose who named them, “The Greenwell Springs Youth Riders” because that was where most of the members resided. In the late 50’s and early 60’s, girls were allowed to join the “Youth Riders” and it was on its way to becoming a legend. More than 60 years later, it is still going strong. Little brothers and sisters sat post and waited their turn. The Youth Riders have always been a family affair.

Ariat Denim For Women: Buying the Perfect Fit & Style

Ariat denim has been a staple in the closets of cowgirls since Cavender’s first started carrying the line in 2011. Ariat was always known for their boots, and now they are a key performance and fashion brand for cowgirls across America. Cavender’s proudly sells Ariat jeans online and in all Cavender’s store locations.

Ariat is known as a modern, competitive and quality choice when choosing jeans. While some shoppers favor the classic and iconic pockets of other brands, we find fans of Ariat are pursuing fit, modern washes and flexibility above all else.

The important thing to know with Ariat is that you can start at either end of the spectrum and find your perfect fit. Whether you’re a cowgirl chasing unmatched stretch and performance features, or a western fashion influencer styling the latest wide leg or boyfriend fit trend, Ariat’s assortment has it all. Fall in love with their comfortable rises and experiment through the whole line of trousers, bootcut and straight leg fits.

We love to mix and match western brands but we also love to find our favorite brand and stick to it. Ariat riding jeans are perfectly paired with square toe performance riding boots, whereas Ariat trousers and fashion jeans are well suited for Ariat’s fashion booties, like the classic Dixon!

How Do Ariat Women’s Jeans Fit?

With so many styles and rises to pick from, Ariat jeans come in a range of fits. You can count on these consistent features of Ariat women’s jeans:

  • Flexible, yet fitted through the thigh (accommodating muscular legs of hard working cowgirls!)
  • Less likely to stretch out from washing cycles in comparison to other brands
  • Consistent sizing. Order from Ariat with confidence knowing they have their sizing consistent across multiple styles
  • No chafe inseams for comfortable wear in all conditions
  • Loop lock feature that resists wear and tear from tugging on belt loops
  • Lightweight denim that is not like the rigid or heavier weight styles you may have experienced from other brands. Ariat jeans are built to move.

Ariat jeans flatter every body type, stretch in all the right places, and never sag or lose their shape.

Selecting The Right Rise of Ariat Jean

There are 5 rises of Ariat jeans available in different styles. Some rises are paired with certain styles to accomplish a fashionable trend forward fit, like Wide leg jeans and higher rises. Other rises are paired with classic styles built for function, like REAL denim paired with the most flattering and universal fit, the Perfect Rise.

Ariat Women's Denim Waist Rise Diagram: What is Your Rise? Finding the perfect fit.

Because fit matters, here is the range of rises in relation to a woman’s natural shape.

  • Ultra high rise sits above the small of the waist
  • High rise sits at the small of the waist
  • Perfect rise sits just below the waist
  • Mid rise sits above the hips
  • Low rise sits at the hips

While style dictates some of the available fits of women’s jeans, Ariat works hard to offer that range of fits and rises to give every denim fan an option. We recommend first trying on the Perfect or Mid rise. You can never go wrong starting with the rise that makes you feel best, then expanding to new fashionable cuts, styles and washes.

Trying on denim can be a marathon, not a sprint. Starting with a rise that gives you confidence is key to finding styles to stock your closet. At Cavender’s nothing makes us happier than guiding you to your perfect Ariat fit that you will be able to refresh every season!

Picking Your Perfect Ariat Jean Style

Now that you’ve mastered your ideal Ariat jean rise it’s time for the fun part- picking your favorite jean style!

Offering wide-leg to skinny, and every practical option in between, there are so many styles from which to choose. You’ll want to pay attention to your boot choices with each denim style, as well as where you want to add volume.

Western style is made up of so many different aesthetics, all authentic to the unique cowgirl behind them. To stock a more traditional wardrobe of Ariat denim fits, we suggest a medium wash bootcut, a dark trouser and a textured or light colored straight leg jean to get your base built!

Styling Ariat Women’s Cowgirl Jeans

At Cavender’s we are always working to bring you the latest denim trends and Ariat is a great partner in offering that variety. As seasons and trends change we find the following groupings to be a key guide for uses of cowgirl jeans.

Straight & Relaxed Straight (Cropped) – These fits are more fashion forward and less traditional. Be prepared to style ankle boots to casual shoes with these cropped straight leg styles. Lengths of these styles vary and you need to consider your height in relation to your booties to get the optimal fit. You want to show just a little ankle but avoid looking like you are preparing for high waters!

Straight & Relaxed Straight – For non cropped styles, straight jeans can fit over boots and provide a laid back style, perfectly paired with a cutter toe boot for a casual relaxed ‘boyfriend’ fit.

Skinny – Cowgirls know that no matter where the mainstream denim trends take us, skinny jeans are required to show off our best pairs of cowgirl boots. Skinny jeans will continue to be a staple in cowgirl closets because we’ve invested too much in boots like Ariat Casanova’s.

Bootcut – The classic is the undisputed working and riding style, as well as a core part of Ariat’s denim offering. For traditional and classic cowgirls, the bootcut jean is available in a variety of rises, washes and pocket patterns. Best paired with square toe, round and cutter toe styles.

Trouser, Slim Trouser and Flare – These styles can bring volume below (Flare), above (Trouser), or at the knee (Slim Trouser). These denim styles are great for balancing extra silhouette or patterns in your tops and pair well with snip toe boots for a sleek appearance. Ariat is known for flattering trouser fits and sophisticated lines that are a part of all corporate cowgirl attire!

Wide Leg Jeans – For a trendy, playful silhouette, these jeans are styled casually when paired with graphic tees and statement belts to draw attention to waistlines. These wide leg styles can also pair with Ariat Hilo or Cruiser Casual Shoes, a pony tail and a ballcap for cowgirl ranch style. In darker washes these can be dressed up with statement jewelry and form fitting structured tops.

Ariat jeans have been a staple in the Cavender’s assortment for many years, and we’ve grown the selection alongside their innovation. We work hard to make sure that we stock a range of fits that cater to all body types and let everyone find an on trend style that works for them. When it comes to Ariat denim – Fit Matters!

Mastering the Art of Cowboy Boot Fitting

If you’re ready to show off your Western heritage or get involved in the Western way of life, you might be wondering, ‘How to fit cowboy boots?’ Well, the first step in getting into a pair of authentic, durable, and attractive cowboy boots is mastering the art of fitting this iconic footwear. This comprehensive guide will be your partner through the process, leading you to the perfect fit for both style and comfort.

First, let’s dive into why it’s important to have well-fitting western boots. Unlike trying on and buying other types of shoes, the process of purchasing cowboy boots involves numerous factors that aren’t typically considered. With so many styles, toe shapes, sole types, shaft heights, etc., there are many choices to make. You can choose depending on what you need your cowboy boots to do for you, and where you will wear them. Don’t forget your unique design and comfort preferences. These boots are built with exceptional attention to detail compared to other types of footwear. Nearly every pair will be slightly different. Because of this, you’ll need to know how to get the right fit for your foot. This is why Cavender’s presents this boot fitting guide.

Understanding Cowboy Boot Sizing and Measurements

Although cowboy boot sizing can vary from brand to brand and style to style, there are certain things you will want to consider when trying them on. The first is the toe box. You should be able to wiggle your toes around with a little bit of space between your toe and the end of the boot. Next, the widest part of the boot is where the widest part of your foot should rest. The instep of a boot is on top of your foot between the ball and the ankle. This should be the tightest part of the boot yet fit comfortably. Lastly, there should be room for your heel to lift slightly as you walk. If your heel is lifting out of the heel area completely, you’ll want to size down.

Unlike regular shoes, multiple measurements factor into the best fit. Of course, you have the usual whole and half size system for both men and women. This is very similar to typical sizing, but you also have width measurements that go from AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, EE and EEE. For women, ‘B’ is considered a standard width, but for men, standard is considered ‘D’. These are also known as an ‘M’ width. When buying cowboy boots, it is always a good idea to size up if you are unsure or in between sizes, as a pair that is too tight can be uncomfortable, especially for lengthy wear.

Calf size measurements are also very important to note when exploring the many options for cowboy boots available at Cavender’s. Shoot for a one to two-inch space around your calf for the most comfortable fit. Boot shafts cover the ankle and calf, tending to have a smaller circumference around the ankle. If you have smaller or bigger calves, trying on boots with varying calf circumferences will be another way to determine the correct size.

Measuring your feet is the perfect place to start when fitting a pair of cowboy boots. To do this, you can use a foot measuring device, which all Cavender’s locations have on-site, or you can get out a ruler at home. For foot length, measure the back of your heel to the tip of your longest toe. For width, measure across the ball of your foot, which is the widest point.

Tips for Achieving the Perfect Fit

Cowboy boots are an investment in style and ties to western heritage. The perfect fit will ensure you get the most out of that investment with consistent and regular wear. To achieve the ideal fit, there are some steps you can take when making your purchase so that your footwear is comfortable long after trying it on for the first time.

The first and possibly most important thing to understand is how to properly try on cowboy boots. Here are our recommended steps for trying on this traditional piece of western fashion.

An illustration showing the anatomy of a cowboy boot, labeling its various parts such as the vamp, heel, shaft, and toe box.

The Anatomy of a Cowboy Boot.

Cowboy Boot Fitting Guide

Key considerations when trying them on:

  • Toe Box: Your toes should have some wiggle room, with a bit of space between the toe and the boot’s end.
  • Widest Part of the Boot: The widest part of your foot should align with the widest part of the boot.
  • Instep: This area, between the ball and ankle, should be snug but comfortable.
  • Heel Fit: There should be room for your heel to lift slightly as you walk, without it slipping out entirely.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Perfect Fit

Step 1: Slide your foot into the boot and pull it on by its bootstraps. There should be slight resistance when pulling them on, but once you get past the resistance point, they should easily slide on and feel comfortable.

Step 1: Pulling on a JRC & Sons cowboy boot, demonstrating the initial process of fitting the boot snugly onto the foot.

Step 2: Check for a slight amount of heel lift to allow for the foot to move and boot to flex. This lift should be between ⅛ and ½ inch.

Step two of fitting a cowboy boot: Checking your heel height. Ensure the boot's heel fits snugly against your foot, providing support and stability.

Step 3: Make sure that the widest part of your foot sits in the widest part of the boot. The ball of your foot should rest where the boot has the most space.

Step three show a person checking the widest part of the foot's ball over the widest section of the boots outsole for proper fit.

Step 4: Stand up and ensure that there is space between the tip of your toe and the end of the boot. The ideal measurement here is about one thumb width.

Step four, shows a person checking the position toes that should be about one thumb width from the end of the toe box.

Step 5: Always take a walk around the store or your house in the boots. Pay attention to places where they rub wrong, feel too tight or are too loose. Cowboy boots need to be broken in, but they should still be comfortable when tried on.

Step five, shows someone walking around with their brown leather cowboy boots, with a JRC & Sons boot box on the ground right next to a boot hook to help remove the boots after checking for appropriate heel lift and comfort.

Exploring Cavender’s Western Boots Collection

When exploring the wide range of boots at Cavender’s, you will quickly realize that there are boots for so many different foot shapes and sizes. It is important to recognize what shape your feet are, so you can look at boots that are built for that shape. Of course, this plays into heel slippage, toe room, width, etc., but it also affects the style that is best for you. Taller heels probably are not best suited for people with foot pain or issues, and those who have joint or ankle problems will likely want a taller, sturdier shaft.

Another consideration in achieving the most comfortable fit possible is what else you put into the boot, like insoles or socks. When trying it on, you should keep that in mind if you prefer certain insoles. You should always wear boot socks that are made to compliment the structure of cowboy boots. Socks and insoles designed specifically for cowboy boots are moisture-wicking and come in varying thicknesses for a personalized fit.

Common Fitting Issues and Solutions

Some of the most common fitting issues, when it comes to cowboy boots, include tightness or looseness in certain areas. Spots that cause discomfort can also come from not being properly broken-in. There are solutions to ensure your favorite style of boot is also comfortable for all-day wear on the ranch, down city streets or at a rodeo.

If one part of a boot is too tight, you can have them professionally stretched in that spot to match the shape of your foot, or you can check out styles with a wider width. For those who are just a touch in between sizes and own a pair of boots that are too loose, that issue can be addressed with thicker socks or insoles. Don’t forget that your foot will likely be slightly different in size throughout the year and different phases of life, so you may need to address these issues more than once.

When it comes to high-pressure points, those can be exaggerated in a new pair of cowboy boots. However, with some padding, moleskin, or customized insoles, you can rock that pair that you love without worrying about pain at the end of the day.

Lastly, breaking in these boots correctly is crucial in finding long-lasting comfort throughout your boots’ lifespan. When you first make that purchase, you should start by wearing your boots indoors for short periods of time, gradually increasing wear time as they start to conform to your foot. If they have laces, avoid over-tightening. Another pro tip to break in boots is to wear thicker socks than normal for the first few wears.

Expert Advice for Customizing Your Fit

Whether it’s your first pair or you’ve been wearing cowboy boots and embracing Western style since you could walk, take a bit of time to consider these things. Advice for boot sizing is one of the best fashion tips we can offer. There are a few things you can do to customize your fit to your unique preferences, starting with seeking out help from the experts.

At Cavender’s, our staff understands cowboy boots and the Western lifestyle. They will know how to help based on your needs. By seeking out professional help, you can ensure you get the perfect fit from the very beginning. Another way professionals come into play is in stretching and making modifications to boots you already own. If there is a pair of cowboy footwear that you just love but don’t fit quite right, professional stretching can help.

Inserts and pads are often overlooked when wearing cowboy boots. This minor adjustment can make all the difference, and there is an expansive selection out there to offer targeted support for your specific foot needs.

Once your boots are in your closet and on your feet, one of the most important things you can do to ensure proper fit is maintenance. Cowboy boots should be regularly cleaned to preserve their shape and fit. Conditioning them often can keep that leather soft and flexible for maximum comfort. Store them upright with boot trees to prevent creasing and to hold their form.
